Medication Administration Training and MAT Independent Study (MAT and MAT-IS)
TRADITIONAL MAT CLASS:
MAT is a strict curriculum mandated by the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) which covers all the routes of medications that child care providers can administer. The class covers in detail how to manage and collect the information for the state forms. Participants practice the written forms and how to give all the medications. The class is video driven.
In the traditional MAT class, participants are with the instructor for the entire class and the instructor provides the handouts.
Please review the MAT Training checklist prior to class. Click here for checklist.
Student materials: Handouts and all supplies are provided by instructor.
Student to instructor ratio: 8:1
Class fee: $110 per person
Approximate class length: 8 to 12 hours. Class may be divided into two sessions.
Two hands-on skills tests and a written exam must be passed for the course certificate. Students are allowed to use their handouts (about 150 pages) for the 95 question exam.
Certificates are issued when all testing is completed and are good for three years. For Family Day Home providers, MAT counts as 8 credit hours of annual training.
Effective July 1, 2010 Family Day Homes must have MAT certification in order to administer prescription and non-prescription medications. Religiously Exempt Child Day Centers and Voluntarily Registered Family Day Homes must have MAT certification in order to administer prescription medication.
